Five abbreviations are defined in a table at the beginning of the appendix: S = Scientology; D = Dianetics; H = Hubbard; q = quote; and pc = preclear.
In most cases there is an obvious association of cryptic phrase with
chapter text, and the order of association matches that of the jumbled
sequence of phrases. But occasionally, in the judgment of the Web
editor, either (a) the order of association differs; (b) an association
is weak; or (c) there is no apparent correspondence.
Below are the citation notes for Chapter 2, as they appear in the Web edition. Note that the order of notes {7} and {8} differs from that in the paperback.

Incidentally, there are other reasons to pay attention to a chapter's citation notes. By serendipitous fortune, the notes also furnish a terse summary of the chapter. And the "extraneous" citations hint at sections cut from the manuscript by the paperback's editors.
