Citations

Paperback edition:
The paperback uses a confusing method for citing references. Most readers will be accustomed to the usual method, which sets a citation marker into the text body (e.g., a superscripted number), then elaborates the citation in a corresponding footnote or endnote. The paperback has no such citation markers. Rather, there is an appendix titled "Source Material Notes". For each chapter, the appendix has a jumbled sequence of sometimes cryptic phrases along with numeric keys to the Bibliography. It is left to the reader to associate each phrase with a corresponding passage in the text. Consider, for example, the notes for Chapter 2, reproduced here as they appear in the appendix of the paperback:
CHAPTER TWO: initial q (261) auditor training to be minister (277) V-8 juice (139) truth detector (29) forced to tell secrets (261) ashamed for mother to find out (25) preclear's records available (255, 261, etc) preclear doesn't know this (255) H gets records (25, 261, 255, etc) knees intertwined (14) touching preclear (16) abnormal sex discussed, no inhibitions (261) three q from pc file (261) pc "sexy..." (261) Fisk shot (134) why shot (144) auditors not investigated (255) story of Justin (255)

Five abbreviations are defined in a table at the beginning of the appendix: S = Scientology; D = Dianetics; H = Hubbard; q = quote; and pc = preclear.

In most cases there is an obvious association of cryptic phrase with chapter text, and the order of association matches that of the jumbled sequence of phrases. But occasionally, in the judgment of the Web editor, either (a) the order of association differs; (b) an association is weak; or (c) there is no apparent correspondence.

Web edition:
In the Web edition, numbered markers have been inserted into the text, with corresponding phrases from the paperback's appendix included at the end of each chapter. In case (a), when the Web edition's citation sequence differs from the paperback's, the paperback's sequence number is shown in parentheses. In case (b), the editor's uncertainty is indicated by the phrase, "{ambiguous citation}". In case (c), the extraneous leftover citation notes appear at the end under a separate heading. Finally, the above five abbreviations (S, D, H, q, and pc) have been expanded, and an occasional explanatory {note from the Web editor} has been inserted.

Below are the citation notes for Chapter 2, as they appear in the Web edition. Note that the order of notes {7} and {8} differs from that in the paperback.

{1} initial quote [261]
{2} auditor training to be minister [277]
{3} V-8 juice [139]
{4} truth detector [29]
{5} forced to tell secrets [261]
{6} ashamed for mother to find out [25]
{7} (8) preclear doesn't know {that confessions aren't confidential} [255]
{8} (7) preclear's records available [255,261,etc.]
{9} Hubbard gets records [25,261,255,etc.]
{10} knees intertwined {during one exercise} [14]
{11} touching preclear [16]
{12} abnormal sex discussed, no inhibitions [261]
{13} three quotes from preclear file [261]
{14} preclear "sexy..." [261]
{15} Fisk shot [134]
{16} why shot [144]
{17} auditors not investigated [255]
{18} story of Justin {a Scientology Reverend} [255]

Incidentally, there are other reasons to pay attention to a chapter's citation notes. By serendipitous fortune, the notes also furnish a terse summary of the chapter. And the "extraneous" citations hint at sections cut from the manuscript by the paperback's editors.
